IEEE Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC) Addresses Public Health and Disaster Response and Management
The HTC is a unique partnership between IEEE and the United Nations Foundation & Vodafone Foundation Technology Partnership that unites technologists and humanitarians in an effort to develop and implement sustainable technological responses to selected humanitarian challenges in developing countries.
IEEE members who are interested in participating are invited to attend a two-day conference in Washington, D.C., 1-2 June. No registration fee is required, but space is limited, so interested individuals should register now. more

IEEE Homeland Security Conference (11-12 May)
IEEE-USA is co-sponsoring the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security, 11-12 May, in Waltham, Mass. The conference will bring together innovators from leading universities, research laboratories, Homeland Security Centers of Excellence, small businesses, system integrators and the end user community to discuss novel and innovative technologies which address some of the most pressing national security problems.

Celebrating 125 Years: IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition
In 2009, IEEE will celebrate its 125th anniversary throughout the year with special events online and across the globe. The IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition recognizes students who develop unique solutions to real-world problems using engineering, science, computing and leadership skills to benefit their community and/or humanity. The challenge: Identify a global or local problem, develop a solution, then tell us how you have made a positive impact in the world. You could win $10,000 and attend the 2009 IEEE Honors Ceremony in Los Angeles. more

The 2009 IEEE International Conference on RFID, 27-28 April, in Orlando, Fla., will bring together leading researchers from around the globe to discuss the current state of international research in RFID technology.

Greater Investment in People, Technology, Energy R&D Needed to Shore Up U.S. Innovation and Competitiveness
IEEE-USA President Russ Lefevre told a national conference audience, "There is much more that needs to be done in terms of investing in technology, in people, and in incentives that will drive innovation and entrepreneurship," as part of the Innovation Panel at the Innovation 2008 conference at the University of Minnesota. Lefevre said one of the top priorities of the new presidential administration should be to fully fund the America Competes Act. more

IEEE Members Receive the 2007 National Medal of Science and 2007 National Medal of Technology and Innovation
Four IEEE members were honored at a black-tie ceremony on 28 September in Washington, D.C., for their contributions to the nation's scientific and technological endeavor. Paul Baran, NovoVentures, Inc., and Armand V. Feigenbaum, General Systems Company, Inc., have been awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, presented each year to the nation's leading innovators. Leonard Kleinrock, UCLA, and Andrew J. Viterbi, USC, received the National Medal of Science, which honors individuals for pioneering scientific research. The awards are the nation's highest honors for scientific and technological achievement. Congratulations to these members for their remarkable accomplishments. more

Promote Tech Literacy: Apply to be IEEE-USA’s Engineering Mass Media Fellow
The AAAS Science and Engineering Mass Media Fellows Program provides an opportunity for college and graduate students in engineering and computer science to work full-time over the summer as reporters, researchers and production assistants in mass media organizations nationwide — including radio and TV stations, newspapers and magazines. Since 2000, IEEE-USA Mass Media Fellows have been assigned to such media outlets as the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, Scientific American, Popular Science and WNBC-TV. The application deadline is 15 January 2009. more

IEEE Elections: Return Your Ballots by 1 October
Ballots were mailed in August for the annual IEEE elections. Marked ballots must be received by the election vendor in Eden Prairie, Minn., by noon central time on 1 October. Future City Competition — 16 Years and Still Going Strong
The Future City Competition, which IEEE-USA introduced to Engineers Week in 1993, held its 16th annual National Finals, 18-20 February in Washington. Teams of middle-school students from 37 regions across the United States competed for the grand prize of a week at U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., and other prizes. IEEE-USA also judged and present the Best Communications System award for the eighth consecutive year. more

IEEE-USA/IEEE continued its role as a primary sponsor of the 2008 Discover Engineering Family Day, held on 16 Feb. at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. The annual event, which unofficially kicked off Engineers Week 2008 (17-23 Feb.), broke previous attendance records with more than 7,300 visitors. more

Call for Proposals: Real-World Engineering Projects
The IEEE is continuing with a second year of funding for a program to develop projects and workshops in IEEE fields of interest for use by faculty members worldwide working with first-year students in electrical engineering (EE), computer engineering (CE), computer science (CS) and electrical engineering technology (EET). EE, CE, CS and EET faculty are invited to participate. The deadline for abstracts is 15 April. more

Engineers Week to Emphasize Engineering Diversity
Engineers Week 2008, to be held from 17 to 23 February, is co-chaired by IBM Corp. and the Chinese Institute of Engineers-USA. Including year-round activities, Engineers Week is expected to reach several million people worldwide, with an emphasis in 2008 on expanding diversity in the engineering field and in the workplace. more

IEEE WIE Magazine Debuts
IEEE Women in Engineering (IEEE WIE) Magazine, a new publication that will be issued twice a year to IEEE WIE members, has launched its premiere issue. The publication's articles integrate engineering subjects with current issues facing society including careers, health care, medicine, law, governance and women's issues. A print edition will be produced for distribution at symposiums and other events throughout the year. more

IEEE-USA Online Engineering Student Video Competition: $10K in Scholarships
Attention budding filmmakers: here's a chance to show the world how cool the engineering profession is — and possibly earn some scholarship money in the process. The challenge: choose an aspect of engineering that you consider to be socially constructive, appealing and "fun"; then translate it into a 90-second video clip aimed at an 11-to-13 year-old audience. All entries must be submitted by midnight Friday, 18 January. more
